They say that good things come in small packages, and Morris Arboretum’s annual Garden Railway exhibit is sure to prove this theory right.
Each year, the Garden Railway exhibit delights arboretum guests with a model train display inspired by a different topic. This year’s theme, Art & Architecture, comes complete with miniature replicas of iconic Philadelphia sculptures like Rodin’s The Thinker and Oldenberg’s Clothes Pin, as well as models of famous lighthouses and roadside attractions.
The entire masterpiece spans a quarter mile and features loops, tunnels, bridges and more, all of which resides in the arboretum’s summer garden.
The display opens to the public on Saturday, May 23. To celebrate the debut, from 1 to 3 p.m. visitors can participate in a slew of fun activities. Guests can build their own miniature structures using edible “materials” like hard pretzels, indulge in free ice cream (while supplies last), and make kid-friendly crafts.
The Garden Railway will be open every day through Labor Day (Monday, September 7). After that, it will remain on display on weekends only through Columbus Day (Monday, October 12).
Throughout the exhibit’s duration, Morris Arboretum will host a series of related programming. Check the online calendar for a schedule of events related to this inventive display.
Access to the Garden Railway is included with regular admission ($16 for adults; $14 for seniors; $8 for military, students and kids ages 3-17; and is free for members, PennCard holders and kids under 3).
While you’re there, be sure to leave time to experience the arboretum’s expansive, 92 acres of exquisite landscaping and natural beauty.
