Video Interlude: Philadelphia Celebrates Today’s Historic Supreme Court Ruling In Favor Of Marriage Equality

To celebrate today's historic Supreme Court ruling, Visit Philadelphia released this video to congratulate America on marriage equality.
In 2004, Philadelphia became the first destination in the world to broadcast a gay-themed television commercial, Philadelphia Get Your History Straight and Your Nightlife Gay
a campaign that went on to garner international awards and recognitions for Visit Philadelphia.
In 2015, over Fourth of July weekend, Philadelphia will mark the 50th Anniversary of the Gay Rights Movement, with a re-enactment of the Reminder Day demonstrations in front of Independence Hall, a wreath-laying ceremony at the historic marker that acknowledges the site of the demonstrations, panel discussions, a festival, concerts and more.
Today, the City of Brotherly Love is a welcoming place for people from around the world, and we’re thrilled to commemorate the historic Supreme Court ruling.

Make your way to 40th and Walnut streets for the June edition of the 40th Street summer series, a free music event.

If free fun is your jam, head to the 40th Street Summer Series, a summertime outdoor performing arts event at 40th and Walnut streets.
Tomorrow, June 27 at 6 p.m. the series will return for its June event where performances by Ballet X, the city’s acclaimed modern ballet group, and Kyo Daiko, a local taiko drumming group, will be featured. Guests are encouraged to bring blankets to spread out on during the show.
The free fun doesn’t stop at performances, though, concert attendees can also enjoy free Ben and Jerry’s ice cream and Philly pretzels, face painting, balloon animals and juggling demonstrations.
All aspects of this Saturday night event are free. The series will take place behind the Walnut West Free Library.
Beyond this event, the series continues on Saturdays, July 25, August 29, and September 26.

The Annual Amada Pig Out Dinner Returns To The Garces Old City Flagship On Sunday, June 28

It's a rare occasion when binging is requested nay, required. But at the annual Amada Pig Out, held this Sunday, June 28, overindulging is exactly what's on the menu.
The event, which has been offered for three years now, is something of a local legend among carnivores.
A traditional Cochinillo Asado, or roast suckling pig is served, along with an array of Spanish accompaniments.
Naturally, such an undertaking requires a large appetite and the determination to make the most of the $55 per person entry for unlimited eats.
The main event is brined and slow cooked for two days and ceremoniously carved tableside for diners.
In addition, the lineup includes a first course of spinach salad, chorizo a la planxa and padrn peppers; a second course of rosemary white beans, roasted fingerling potatoes and garbanzos a la Catalana along with the endless supply of pork; and a dessert course of cochinillo cookies and bacon shortbread with Nutella.

This summer, The Philadelphia Orchestra returns to its summer home The Mann Center with six concerts in June and July.

The Mann Center for the Performing Arts, one of the city’s favorite outdoor music venues hosts a glorious summer season complete with musical acts by some of the biggest names in the biz and the city, too.
The Philadelphia Orchestra will return to its summer home — The Mann Center — to play six concerts throughout June and July.
The Orchestra will start its Mann Center residency tomorrow, June 23 with Tchaikovsky with Fireworks, a concert featuring some of Tchaikovsky’s most-known works — Swan Lake, 1812 Overture and more. The show concludes with a fireworks show high above the Fairmount Park concert venue.
The series continues this week with a screening of The Godfather on Thursday, June 25. The Philadelphia Orchestra will perform the score as the classic film plays.
On Friday, June 26, the concerts wrap up for June (but take note, the shows continue in July!) with A Night of Gershwin with The Philadelphia Orchestra. Listen to the talented musicians perform celebrated songs by the Gershwins, including excerpts from Porgy and Bess and An American in Paris.
Tickets prices vary depending on the show, but all tickets start at just $20 or $25. Tickets are available online.

Travel + Leisure Confirms Philadelphia Has Become A Beer Garden Haven

It’s certainly no secret to us that hanging out in beer gardens has become a quintessential Philadelphia summertime pursuit.
Philadelphians and visitors flock to the great spaces, and even The New York Times cited the emerging prevalence of beer gardens as a reason Philadelphia was ranked #3 in its 52 places to go in 2015.
Seasonal parks and pop-up beer gardens have more momentum than ever as evidenced by the popularity of Spruce Street Harbor Park, the return and expansion of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's Pop-Up Gardens, and the arrival of brand-new pop-ups, like the Point Breeze Pop-Up.
We can't get enough of awesome pop-up parks and proper outdoor-drinking destination and neither can Travel + Leisure.
The lauded travel publication’s site recently published a piece looking at a handful of Philadelphia’s top beer gardens — including Independence Beer Garden, Spruce Street Harbor Park and The Oval — and declaring the city as being in the middle of a “beer garden renaissance.”

Coping with rookie frustration in Eagles camp…
One of the good reports coming out of Eagles minicamp is that Eagles 1st-round draft pick Nelson Agholor has so far avoided the somewhat typical phase of rookie frustration.
Excuse me for saying “Whoa Nellie!” (I’m going to be the first to use that phrase every time Agholor makes a big catch or a big play when the real-time action begins.)
For most rookies and even some 2nd-year guys, the transition from college ball to the pro camp experience is a test of adaptive learning and simply overcoming frustration.
2nd-year receiver Josh Huff is reportedly still going through frustration with the pace of practice. The receivers in particular are challenged with getting back quickly to the next offensive play after running their previous routes— and still with enough time before the snap to pick up the complete play call.
You’re a star in college—and all of a sudden you are struggling as an entry-level pro.
You’ve got a new system to learn with different verbiage and keys.
You’re sometimes losing focus because you’re tired. The reps are fast-paced and if you’re a receiver or running back you probably are racking up hundreds of “yards gained” at each practice. Plus you probably had to get up at 5:00 A.M. just to get in your lifting and meeting room time.
You’re thinking too much, hesitating sometimes to read what’s around you, and not consistently reacting with fluid response to the play.
You used to get by on your natural speed, size and athletic ability in college. But now everyone in camp is as big, fast or athletic as you.
And they haven’t even started hitting yet…
I was listening to Stan White, former NFL linebacker and now a high school head coach, speak on the radio a couple of nights ago about the NFL rookie transition process. He said it basically boils down to knocking off these three goals in succession:
1. Absorb the language and the spacing in the playbook as soon as possible;
2. Build the self-confidence to efficiently read a play properly then quickly react;
3. When the hitting and tackling begin, establish your physicality and toughness as quickly as possible.
It’s not easy. White pointed out on his show that he has been doing some talking with 2nd-year Ravens linebacker Arthur Brown about his struggles with all of the above. Brown is one of the fastest inside backers in all of football going sideline to sideline. He used that sheer speed to dominate in college. But after he was a high draft pick two years ago, he still finds himself frustrated with shedding blockers and misreading plays. Unless he makes a quantum leap in that department, Arthur Brown may be out of a job next year.
“Nellie” Agholor may be that rare rookie exception who makes a smooth transition to pro ball.
A lot of times a rookie receiver gets frustrated because the easy separation he used to get in college just ain’t happening at the NFL level.
All reports out of Eagles minicamp gave Nellie high grades for his route-running, his catching ability, his familiarity with the language and the playbook, and his energetic conditioning.
But even Nellie admits he makes some mistakes every day in practice:
“I believe that you really have to take lumps to grow. If everything was going your way so fast and it was so smooth and feeling like it was easy, then you could see yourself missing out on minor details that could come back to hurt,” Agholor told Dave Spadaro in an interview at PE.com. “When you make a mistake, you have a conversation with your coaches. You get your peers’ input, your coaching points and you watch the film. And you can grow from all of that.”
“I’m embracing being here. I know that every day is a new experience for me to learn my way. I have a better formula for success today than I did when I went to college.
